In August, between 11 and 16, the centre is denser than central Vienna. Add an hour of looking for parking and a tourist-priced lunch and it's fair to ask whether to bother.

Where to eat without the tourist trap

Open-fire grill in a medieval jail. Touristy on the surface, but the meat is real and the beer is honest. Book ahead for dinner.
One of the very few vegetarian-first places in town. Terrace right on the Vltava, indoor seating in a Gothic vault. Worth the slight detour.
Working brewery since 1560. 90-minute guided tour, tasting in the cellar, restaurant attached. Reservation strongly recommended in summer.
